Anthony Bate

2/5

Biography

An immaculate gent of sober appearance and cultivated presence, Bate was seemingly destined to play spymasters and senior civil servants. Lean, pale-eyed and of deceptively mild intonation, he was capable of unnervingly icy composure, never more effectively displayed than as the chameleon-like Soviet mole 'Kim Philby' -- all with equal vigour and conviction. One of the unsung heroes of British television, Anthony Bate passed away in June 2012 at the age of 84.

Trivia

He portrayed "Harry Kane" in "The Avengers" episode "The Avengers" {Tunnel of Fear (#1.20)} after Murray Hayne dropped out at the last minute. Because the article in the TV Times listed Hayne as the actor who had played Kane - by the time Bate was brought in, it was too late to change the listing - Hayne was thought to have portrayed Kane for over fifty years.

Cast as Doctor Fendleman in Doctor Who:Image of The Fendahl but dropped out. Denis Lill took the role.

Considered for the roles of Dr. Armstong, Bukovsky and Sir Percy in Lifeforce.
