Worked as a bank clerk before turning to acting.

He was awarded the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award in 1987 (1986 season) Best Comedy Performance for "When We Are Married".

Gave Peter Cushing his first professional stage job.

At the age of twenty ran his own repertory company at Worthing. Acted on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the British National Theatre, having made his debut at the West End in 1939. Served with the RAF during World War II. In later years, toured Australia and appeared at the Canadian George Bernard Shaw Festival. Film roles small, but popular on television in shows like "Bootsie and Snudge" and "Rumpole of the Bailey" .
