In the early 80s, he was the singer for a well-known southern California punk band called Dr. Know. He is also covered in many tattoos from this period in his life.

Named his son Lincoln Bixby Cruz after Bill Bixby.

(October 2004) He quit singing for legendary punk band, Dead Kennedys , in April 2003. He now produces and edits television shows in Los Angeles and sings with his original band, Gary Dr. Know Miller. The band is recording a new album, which will be available in 2005.
