A friend of The Beatles , she was a hat-check girl at the Cavern during their formative years as a group. John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote songs for her to launch her career as a singer. Her manager was Brian Epstein , who was also The Beatles manager, and she was the first female recording artist to be signed by Epstein. McCartney wrote the theme song "Step Inside Love" which was also a single for Black. The Beatles version was released on the Anthology CDs.

Had a number 1 hit in the UK with: "Youre My World".

She was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1997 Queens New Year Honours List for her services to entertainment.
