Died observing the eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980. Witnessed the largest landslide in recorded history. He was located on a ridge five miles north of the volcano. He was directly in the path of the lateral blast.
Predicted that Mount St. Helens would erupt in a very violent, explosive way.
