Daughter of the Belfast actor, Joseph Tomelty.
Children: Joseph Sumner (b. 23 November 1976) and Fuchsia Katherine (Fuschia Sumner by Sting.
Met Sting in 1974 on the set of Rock Nativity, a Christmas show/rock musical, which was playing in Newcastle, UK: Frances was playing the Virgin Mary; Sting played in the pit orchestra that supplied the music. They married in a Catholic ceremony at Our Lady and St. Oswins Chapel in Tynemouth.
