Served in the US Air Force during WW II.

He is also known as one of the busiest trailer music composers in Hollywood with over 2,000 trailers and television campaigns for major films. He received the 1998 Gold Score Award for best compilation album from SCORELOGUE, and the International Film Music Critics Jury awarded him second place to Jerry Goldsmiths "The Omen" compilation. Readers Choice chose "Heart of the Ocean", on which John performed, as best of the year 1998 and his "Coming Soon" album as #2. In early 1999 he released "Watch The Skies" "The Snow Files" and "The Funhouse" showcasing his own compositions as well as those of Mark Snow, Danny Elfman, and Alan Silvestri.

Became General Manager of the Hollywood Symphony Orchestra in 2006.

Married to Helene Nielsen Beal 2002-.
