He was best known as the blustery Southern politician Sen. Beauregard Claghorn ("Thats a joke, son!") on Fred Allen s radio program in the 1940s.
Started out as a child actor in silent films, most notably appearing in D.W. Griffith s Orphans of the Storm (1921) .
Portrayed Senator Beauregard Claghorn and also was the announcer for NBC Radios "The Fred Allen Show" (1945-1949).
His famous radio character, Senator Beauregard Claghorn, was the inspiration for the Warner Brothers cartoon character Foghorn Leghorn.
