Matthew Mackendree Lanter was born April 1, 1983 in Massillon, Stark County, Ohio, to Jana Kay and the Nautica Malibu Triathlon, where he was part of the "Commander in Chief" celebrity relay team. Despite being busy working in the industry, Matt says that he tries to stay as humble as possible. When he's not acting, he enjoys being outdoors, playing golf and relaxing at the beach. Matt married his longtime girlfriend, Angela Lanter, on June 14, 2013.

Matts maternal grandparents were both of part Polish descent. Matts other ancestry is English, Austrian, Scottish, German, and more distant Irish and 1/128th German Jewish-Dutch Jewish. Through his father, Matt is descended from the Sheftall family, Jewish immigrants who settled in Georgia in the 1700s; Matts six times great-grandfather Levi Sheftall was the brother of Mordecai Sheftall. Mordecai was a Colonel in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, who was the highest ranking Jewish officer of the Colonial forces.
