Best known as the pianist, regular lead singer, and occasional drummer of , Manuel took part in both the original incarnation of the group from 1967 to 1976, & the second incarnation from 1983 until his death. Member of the musical group The Band.

Elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of the Band) in 1994.

Was the first and last voice to be heard on The Band s "Music From Big Pink" album.

Hanged himself in a hotel bathroom during The Band reunion tour. All members of the group except Robbie Robertson attended his funeral.

Played piano for The Band , and was one of the groups three lead vocalists, alongside bassist Rick Danko and drummer Levon Helm. Also served as drummer on songs where Helm played mandolin or rhythm guitar.
