Shifty-eyed British character actor of the 50s who specialized in playing elusive, cigarette-dangling shysters and thieves.

His daughter with his wife Joy Shelton , Jennifer Tafler also appeared in some movies. Third child is actor Jonathan Tafler , whose films include Yentl , Song of Songs and The infidel.

Related by marriage to director Lewis Gilbert who cast him in a number of against-type roles in such films as Reach for the Sky , Sink the Bismarck! and The Spy Who Loved Me .

Brother of Sheila Aza and uncle of actress-turned-journalist Gillian Gore and actor-turned-editor/location manager Graham Aza.

Graduated from RADA in 1936. Subsequently appeared in classical roles on stage at the West End and at the Old Vic, between 1944 and 1946.
