He became interested in acting while in the Boy Scouts and in grammar school in Birmingham.
He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.
While training at RADA, got his first acting part as a Nubian steward in the Agatha Christie play "Death on the Nile" at the Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham.
Before achieving acting success in London, he cleaned tables at a Covent Garden restaurant, for which he was paid in sandwiches.
Best known for his role as the likeable dog handler P.C. Henry Snow in "Softly Softly: Task Force" and as Russia expert Roy Bland in "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" .
National service with the Royal Air Force.
