Early in his acting career, a major agency was interested in signing him, until they realized that he bore a striking resemblance to an actor they were already representing, Nicholas Walker. The agency declined to represent Matthews.

His five children are Ethan, Hannah, Caleb, Abigail, and Caris.
Attended Radnor Senior High School in suburban Philadelphia along with filmmakers Nick Briscoe , Rob Meltzer , Alex Garcia , Bill Amenta , Benjamin Goldstein , Regina Taufen , and writer Meredith Scardino.
