This first "Star Wars" film(though later sub-titled 'Episode IV') was a groundbreaking, box office shattering breath of fresh air to the cinemas, and science fiction in particular, which had gotten bogged down in bleak Dystopian futures. Nothing wrong with that in some cases, but moviegoers craved more, and got it with this extremely exciting tale of youth rebellion against an evil galactic empire led by Darth Vader(I though he was a robot at first viewing as a youngster!
Might as well get it out there. Sci-fi "almost" never age well, and this is no exception.
From the perspective of more than 50 years ago, it was a great movie.
The first Star Wars film showcases the best aspects of the film series right from the start. It's not hard to see how it has evolved into such a huge franchise.
I think it's obvious why this movie was so big at the time it was released and is still popular nowadays. What I liked the most about this film was lots of colorful characters.
(5 out of 5 stars).Star Wars will forever be the first true science fiction classic.
It's the original ground-breaking movie... that was then ruined by idle hands.
I have a book entitled "Alternate Worlds: The Illustrated History of Science Fiction" by James Gunn published in 1975. It describes the culture of science fiction B.
